Battle of Cannae was one the decisive battle of the first part of the Second Punic War fought between the Roman Republic and Carthage. The military genius of the famous Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca met with an overwhelming number of roman soldiers. There were almost twice more legionaries than Carthaginian troops. Would the military cunning and talent be able the brute force and numbers?

I don't know how anyone can argue Hannibal wasn't the best general in history. Against the odds and difficulties he faced, his campaign was nothing short of genius.

Excellent video. Just a small correction: the roman legionaries adopted the gladius hispaniensis only in 209 BC. At Cannae they still used mainly the La Tene B sword and, possibily, the ξίφος.

The whole battlefield can be seen from a small hill. I was there in about 1967, as a 14 year old boy. The hill it self was most likely the position of Hannibal's Headquarters. The river was a small very shallow stream when I saw it. And from the appearance of its slope was never very deep. It was hard to imagine that, that many men crowded into that small of space. In the 1960's farmers were still, even nearly 2, 000 years after the battle, collecting bits and pieces of weapons, after rains, and plowing.

Please, is there any famous manual/base book on military tactics from antiquity, such as wedge, square, pincer, etc, infantry line formation, cavalry, slingshot, etc? Or even a .PDF?

The one thing nobody talks about is Hannibals army cleaning up the battlefield with massive fire cairns. It took days to do this and this is one reason Hannibal didn't match immediately on Rome.

The orientation of the armies, in respect to the river, is not known from actual eye witnesses of the battle. As far as I have been able to determine. Having been at the battlefield, it makes more sense to imagine the Romans formation with its back to the stream/river.Hannibal it seemed to me would have managed the battle from the hill. From the the top of the hill to the center of the battle is about the distance of about two soccer fields. So much of this depiction is, , presumed.
