Hannibal was a pure genius man. Its amazing how he could still set up ambushes on flat ground.

Hannibal is a clear cut example of how you can win a battle, but loose a war through no fault of your own yet decided by you

They said the Gods blessed Hannibal twice, but cursed Carthage thrice.

Hannibal's battle tactics at Cannae in 216 BCE were as deadly as the atom bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945. According to Polybius, the largest army ever fielded by Rome suffered 70, 000 killed in a single afternoon, not with machine guns, bombs, tanks and artillery, but by the sword and spear. Hannibal's amazing victory is even more impressive because he was outnumbered by the Romans almost 2 to 1. The battle is widely regarded as the most perfect in history, and many of the top military commanders in the next 2200+ years have tried to emulate it, without anyone ever equaling or surpassing the master

For those interested in the Second Punic War, the BBC docu-film "Hannibal, Rome's Worst Nightmare" is probably, besides "Cabiria", the best adaptation of the conflict. Not only it's very historically accurate (especially with their depiction of Roman armors), but the portrayals of Hannibal and Scipio were so amazingly done that I can't imagine a different version of both generals.

As he would later say, if not for Zama, Hannibal would be indisputably the greatest general ever.

Scipio Africanus: "Sh*t! That bastard of Hannibal has destroyed our troops at Cannae! WE ARE ALL DEAD!!!"
Augur: "Don't worry about Hannibal, sir! A recent prophecy has told me that a man from the House of Julia will restore the glory of Rome!"
Scipio Africanus: "Really?! And when will that brave man appear to save us?!"
Augur: "In 150 years..."
Scipio Africanus: *Proceeds to beat the sh*t out of the augur with a roman standard*

I would love to see a two or three part film trilogy on Hannibal. These battles would look amazing.

If only Carthage had his back, what a crazy world that would’ve turned out to be.

Rome just dusts itself off, slaps together another army, and gets right back to it.
