I’m old enough to have worked on frame setting tables back in the day. A nice Italian frame came in, you faced the head tube, chased and faced the bb, aligned the rear drop outs then set it on the table to check its trueness. A lot of work yes, but you had less bearing issues downstream. Also, no bearing races, the balls were set individually
