Why We're Over Influencer Culture: What Went Wrong?

In this video, we’re diving deep into the celebrityification of influencers—how they went from relatable online friends to living luxury-filled, unattainable lives. Once beloved for their authenticity, influencers like beauty creators have now embraced the very traits that made traditional celebrities feel out of touch. From private jets and scandals to million-dollar PR packages, we’ll explore how influencers lost the trust of their audiences and became more like Hollywood elites than everyday people.

We’ll also trace the historical roots of influence, looking at parallels with figures like Marie Antoinette, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and even old Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe. This video uncovers why beauty influencers in particular have faced backlash, scandals, and a toxic culture that led to their downfall.

Do you think influencers can ever regain their authenticity? Or is the age of the relatable content creator over? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Honestly they often feel worse than celebrities, at least most celebrities don't pretend they are just like us. Influencers may start like us but once they blow up they're relatability is gone.

It’s so annoying, every single time, there’s people trying to make u buy something. I know some influencers came from humble beginnings, and still they will lie and lie so they can make a check

I don't like watching influencers anymore, I would rather watch people like you. You remind me of the originals I followed back in 2011, but more refined which is nice. ❤

They’re glorified salespeople. Why would I take the advice of someone basically paid to flog products that are sent to them with the expectation that the influencer would push that product?

The influencer I watch now is Emily Noel. She doesn’t do sponsorships, never launched a makeup line, promotes affordable products, and still does old-style tutorials. She’s been on YouTube for years, and is always fresh and relatable.

I see influencers like a new profound tv-shop.

You create such interesting mini documentaries. I much prefer to watch actual content creators, and I tend to avoid these so called 'influencers.' 💜

I've stopped watching influencers. I used to love watching videos about beauty application techniques, what products were good for various situations, and I loved dupe videos when it was more like someone just happened to find a dupe for something, rather than a dupe being intentionally made like they are now. I get tired of 'new new new' and 'buy buy buy'. I watch people who shop their stash, use what they have in creative ways, and are more financially frugal and less wasteful.

Its the fact they stray so far from where they started, that the person starts feeling disingenuist and phony.

I’ve been watching YouTube since 2006 and watched the OG beauty gurus in high school/college. The shift over the years has been interesting. When more mainstream beauty influencers came on the scene and everyone started started going more high tech the community really changed.

Thinking of Martha Stewart as an influencer is both accurate and hilarious 😂

Idk. Today's influencers may go out of style, but I don't think notoriety will ever go out of style. I think that anywhere there's a society, some people will achieve notoriety and other people will admire them for it. 🤷🏽‍♀️

So true

I used to watch perfume reviewers that I trusted as they appeared to enjoy a similar fragrance wardrobe however some of these influencers have turned into commercial influencers even reporting on some fragrances as so unique when they smell just like the same fragrance they posted on a year ago. Total betrayal!!!!
They present more as commercial ads vs honest reviews. I appreciate honesty as your channel displays.

In all honesty, I don’t blame influencers, I 100% blame those who put them on a pedestal instead of treating them like regular people who have a platform.

I remember following Kandee Johnson and Graveyardgirl back in the day

You're about the only beauty influencer I've ever followed, and you have more varied content, and I really like your voice

Influencers r something I don't watch, well occasionally they may come up on my feed but really I prefer to watch real people. I actually look at my mum, she is so gorgeous and I remember her putting make up on in her mirror and watching her when I was 5 years old. She is in her 70 ' s now and still is the same ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Once the people I watched started doing sponsored content on the items they were reviewing, I stopped seeing them as relatable. It's just the same paid programming people claimed they hated.

I'd much rather watch real people like you who are beautiful and approachable. I'm so through with the Kardashians!
