In this video I show how you can make bromine by oxidizing potassium bromide with potassium permanganate and sulfuric acid.
I measured out 357 grams of potassium bromide and 94,8 grams of potassium permanganate in 1 liter 3 necked round bottom flask. The flask was arranged for simple distillation and 135 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid were added dropwise. To reduce side reaction adding 150 ml of water is recommended prior to the sulfuric acid. The reaction was very exothermic and bromine started to distill over. When the addition was completed, the flask was heated in an oil bath. If there is still potassium permanganate in the mixture more sulfuric acid should be added.
The distilled bromine was transferred to a separatory funnel and separated from the water. Then 1/3 of its volume sulfuric acid was added to dry the bromine. After shaking and separating the two layers, the bromine was distilled one more time.
Yield 209 g, 87%.

that was a neat reaction, and the most dangerous chemical used was conc. H2SO4, I'm used to working eith concentrated acids, so this is something I could do safely in a fume hood. Neat stuff! I'd love to try this out sometime. on top of that, itd be cool to react the bromine with lithium or sodium for the exothermia!

I recommend using Manganese Dioxide instead of the Permanganate if you want to use Manganese (which is terrible by the way lol), to avoid the formation of Mn2O7, I know the risk is low but just the fact that it can detonate if there is any organic contamination really scares me.

Interesting synthesis as it is quite rare KMnO4 is used in the production of bromine from bromide salts. I would consider KMnO4 too precious to use in this kind of reaction as there are other simpler means of synthesis, such as conc H2O2 (i can get 50% H2O2 easily and cheaply). Beware that mixing H2SO4 and KMnO4 is an extremely dangerous practice, as it generates Mn2O7 in situ which is one of the strongest oxidizers that exist and would turn your RBF into a bomb. Cleaning the flask would pose huge risks as the permanganate decomposes to ozone gas (through an eqb with permanganic acid) at around 70% concentration of sulfuric acid, a terrible gas to breathe in, notwithstanding exothermic hydration of that much conc sulfuric acid splattering the oxidizing mix all over you.

Nice to know, but, I don't want to make bromine anywhere outside of a well equipped lab. And, even there, I'd tend to hesitate. Same goes for fluoride and chlorine.
