I have never used an Uber.
In the UK, any vehicle carrying passengers in exchange for money must be licensed, either as a Hackney Carriage (i.e. taxi) which can park in taxi ranks and be hailed down on streets, or Private Hire Vehicles, which are strictly booked in advance. That you need a licence, I suppose, kinda defeated Uber's business model in the UK since people wouldn't want to pay for a whole Private Hire Vehicle licence just for an occasional ride for some extra change.
