Dr. Jessica Shellock, Spine surgeon at Texas Back Institute treats patients with many types of spinal conditions including Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD), also known as Spondylosis. Spondylosis is a condition that usually occurs due to aging. As the term implies, it is the progressive deterioration of the discs between the vertebral bodies. Spondylosis (a different term than spondylolisthesis) is typically a degenerative condition of the joints of the spine and is also known as spinal osteoarthritis. The discs, joints and ligaments of the spine are generally involved. The discs lose their cushioning effect between the spinal bones, the ligaments become weaker or thicken, and the bones can develop bony growths or spurs. Aging and repetitive stresses to the spine are the primary causes of this degeneration, but it also can be present in younger adults who have had prior trauma. Not everyone will have symptoms (usually pain) as a result of spondylosis. If severe, spondylosis may cause pressure on nerve roots with subsequent pain or tingling in the arms or legs.

Aging process? I got this at like 27 years old. Now I’m 33. This shouldn’t be happening. Makes you wonder what will happen when I’m 50

I live with pretty severe pain as the result of this disease. I have had radio neurotomy 3 times, steroid injections 3 times, seen a chiropractor, had acupuncture, all to no avail. At present I am on pretty heavy pain medication to cope with it (methadone). I am only 59 years old and cannot work because of it.
Contrary to this video I must state that spondylosis is in no way a part of the normal aging process.
If this could be controlled with a "few extra Tylenol" my life would be very different today.

just came across this vidoe. of all the explanations i have come across, this one is the best and most accurate, without scaring the crap out of a person. 😍🤩

I’m rather relieved that so many people are saying they got this at a young age. I’m 33 and was just diagnosed with this, and thought it meant that my body is that of a 60 year old. I know I need to get in better shape, but I’m just glad this isn’t seemingly related to that. I start PT soon and hope my pain will subside!

As i write this, i am 29 years old (will be 30 at the end of this year) and i have degenerative disk disease at the bottom of my lumbar spine causing me to have excruciating sciatica pain in my left leg. I have had this pain since 2022, i went to an osteopath twice, acupuncture 4 times and nothing has worked. This year i went to the chiropractor and it was getting more painful than it will heal. I live in the UK where my national health service is turned in to garbage by my corrupt Tory government. Worst of all, beginning july, i caught a whooping cough sickness which adds more pain to my sciatica hurt leg as well as making me throw up. I am depressed and understandably Livid...

I am 16 and I have spondylosis. My injury accured while I was twisting my hips around on my couch, while sleeping, I suddenly felt a stabbing kind of pain in my left glute muscle. It happened a month ago, but I started feeling a lot of stiffness and pain about 2 weeks ago.

I was diagnosed with spondylosis at 23yrs. Now that I'm 44, with spondylosis & fibromyalgia the pain is horrible!

I have this. Was told by an orthopedic last year. But it's much worse than mild symptoms. There are days when I can barely move because it hurts so much.

diagnosed at 16 I have M47.814 - Spondylosis (degenerative osteoarthritis) in the lumbar spine without nerve compression, L5-S1 disc bulge in the lower back, T7-T8 disc protrusion (3mm size, extending 5mm into spinal canal, indenting the spinal cord on the left side) in the thoracic spines. I’ve gone through during this time 4 different PTs where I reached maxed benefits and chiro 3 times a week, doing decompression stretches, strengthening, cupping, dry needles, acupuncture, electroshock therapy, CBD, and your other typical trigger point injection, facet injection, bilateral facet injection, epidural injection, double epidural injection, followed by a discogram and stem cell treamt done a year ago. about to get a spinal fusion....

As long as you haven’t lost much disc height and it’s not bulging then I wouldn’t worry about it much. Just do the same core exercises that physical therapists would gave patients do and make sure you are careful and font herniate a disc. Once one herniation happens it’s way easier to do it again and the degeneration will speed up the more times you herniate it. I’ve herniated like six times and my disc looks like a flat tire. The problems come with fissures which weaken and cause bulging which can cause sciatic nerve pain which is horrible sometimes. If you lose height of the disc then you can get sponylolisthesis and it puts more stress on facet joints. If you lose a lot of height then bone spurs can start to develop. It sucks when you get this and you’re not even old yet.

Ive been in constant pain with my back since I was 10yrs old. It was brushed off a growing pains. Its only now, st 36yrs old, after being hit by a car that my Spondylosis has been picked up, after an xray. I've suffered almost all of my life so far with this but have been fobbed off at every turn

Wonderful video, but your dx is deceiving. It does NOT solely have to do with aging of the spine. I have advanced rheumatoid arthritis, as does my daughter who is only 27 years of age, and we both are dealing with spondylosis. I am 48 years old and my x-rays show the spine of a woman who is typically elderly. I am not an athlete, I have simply been dealing with an aggressive form of RA for 10 years. My daughter is a young woman and has had to get cortisone injections because she was unable to walk. Just as we do not like the word "arthritis" being in RA, preferring Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease, saying that spondylosis ONLY is a disease of aging is very, very deceiving. It makes people like my daughter and I say "what happened to us?"

I highly recommend physical therapy for this. It helps to strengthen the muscles in the glutes and back. It’s already helped my sleep so much. Forget meds and injections. I never had any of that and honestly I don’t want it. Good luck everyone.

I really wish we could prioritize finding a cure for this disease.
