Installing ESXi in a virtual machine provides a way to try the product without dedicating hardware to it. A virtual ESXi machine may be useful if you are studying to become a VCP (VMware Certified Professional).

Note: For best viewing results, ensure that the 720p HD setting is selected and view full screen mode.

@VMwareKB
What are the Minimum Requirements for this to Work on the Host Side? Is a Computer with 8 Gb RAM enough?

This error could be happening for several reasons.

I would suggest reading the following VMware KB articles as they might provide additional insights into the issue:

It is possible to install ESXi in a Workstation 9 based virtual machine. If you are following the instructions contained within VMware KB article 2034803 then it should succeed for you. However, there are a number of environmental variables and factors which could cause it to fail. It would need to be investigated in order to determine where in the process things are going wrong for you.
