Spotthedog is correct, what you're supposed to do is rock back & forth so you're crossing square, and take the smallest reading as that is the true bore measurement at that spot. measurements have to be taken top, mid and bottom and repeated at 90 degrees so you also get the out-of-round indication to see if it's out of spec and needs to be bored out.

Why not just use a speed square. I do.
