When Korea was partitioned along 38 parallel after second world war, North Korea was mostly mountainous . While South Korea was plain and was fit for cultivation, most of the agricultural production before partition of Korea came from southern portion, after North Korea came into its existence, efforts were done to increase production by clearing forests on mountains and doing cultivation, this helped situation to a small extent, this is major cause of North Korea food crisis .

Jimmy Carter literally explained during a Church sermon that the Famine was primarily the cause of US sanctions. This isn't a north Korean source saying it, this is from literally the guy who sat in the oval office as the leader of the Free World.

I have heard that the North Koreans ran out of fertilizers, and had their people save their own poop! They had to have a quota for each person! So sad, for these people 😢!
