In todays video im looking at how well IK Multimedia's TONEX pedal goes with external effects.
I am looking at compressor and overdrive pedals before Tonex and Reverb and delays after TONEX.
The drive pedals ill be using are Earthquaker Devices Palisades, Great Eastern FX CO FOCUS FUZZ after the TONEX pedal Im using an AXE FX 3 for all of the reverb and delays.

The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

If you want a small portable rig with tons of options, and doesn’t cost $2, 000, just get a ToneX for all amps and drive, a GT1000 core for all modulation, and a volume/wah pedal. Done. Small and light, and all in is about $1, 000 less than a Kemper, Fractal, or even a Quad Cortex. Finally!

For those that keep asking why there is no fx loop. Here is your quick answer. Just throw a ts-9 in the front of the tonex and an Eventide H90 after the tonex pedal. Play for about 5 minutes then go to your local pub and drink until you have figured out why this works. You will thank me if you don’t have a hangover the next morning.

By far one of the best demos of the TONEX I've seen. Can't wait to put this on my board.

It’s a testament to your expertise and delivery that I enjoyed every minute of this even though I have no intention of adding modeling to my signal chain anytime soon. Your playing and explanations are entertaining and educating in the best way.

I started running my Tonex through an Emptome (EHX). Since I play a Chapman NS Stick, I split it from there on the bass strings, and push the melody strings through an Ampero Stomp 2, then some pitch shifters, and EHX synth pedals. FUn stuff! Great vid explaining everything, too.

This demo hits at exactly what I've been chasing in regards to using analog drive pedals and digital amps. Lately I've been using a Vox Valve-Energy Silk Drive as a sort of always on input buffer/tone sweetener between my boost/drive/fuzz pedals and Focusrite Scarlet, and achieving decently realistic results. My philosophy with that is it's better to drive the Nu-tube to slight clipping than the interface preamp, and it also makes whatever Sim I'm using "feel" or ideally react in a more organic and analog way.
Anyway, this Tonex Pedal looks/sounds most impressive within this exceptional demonstration.
Great job dude.
Although IMO?
It's possibly IK's new $130 AXE I/O One interface that's eventually going to end up reeling me into the whole Tonex ecosystem me thinks.
The features & capability on that little affordable gizmo should put it on just about every guitarist's Christmas Wish List!
Ha!
Cheers Paul!✌

With thanks to your help and demos, I just ordered the ToneX Pedal. Cue the hyperventilation! I'm probably going to order a Boss GT-1000CORE and add in my Specular Tempus. Cheers lads!

Thanks for this video. I just bought two Tonex pedals for my wife and me, and plan on using them with my HX stomp for delays and reverb etc. I was wondering why everyone was harping on using an effects loop. I love my physical drive pedals and wanted to hear the Tonex with a setup like you have here. I purchased your Tonex pack off your site. Thanks!

Very interesting point about how a standard effects loop routes pristine digital effects through an imperfect guitar speaker cab (or in the case of an amp + effects in a box, through an IR emulation of the imperfections of a guitar speaker cab). I saw a video about Larry Carlton's live set up a few years ago. He had his own mic in front of his guitar amp connected to a small mixer that sat close to him. He applied his reverbs, delays etc in the mixer and sent them to two PA speakers (eg, something like 12" JBLs) that sat on the stage either side of the guitar amp. The guitar amp and two PA speakers were then mic'ed up for FOH and stage monitoring. At the time I thought it was preserving the amp tone in its purest form, as well as getting his effects in stereo. But your video makes me think it was also about preserving the quality of his post-amp effects by applying them after the guitar cab.

Great video as usual. I bought the Tonex just to get your Matchless sound!

I'd love to see a deep dive update after you've used it in the trenches on an actual gig, Paul.
This thing appears to be a game changer in the tweakable context of a studio setting. Can it stand should to shoulder with you on the fly whilst the bride and groom do a first dance?!?
I look forward to that update dude!
