If I draw a rose and it comes out looking like cabbage I'm going to be like, "look at this awesome cabbage I drew".

Thanks for the tips. I haven't done charcoal since I was in high school been 8 years for me. The only time I use charcoal pencils is when I'm sketching out for paintings. Charcoal will be something that I will get into later on after I get back into my groove in art. Been out for 4 years and it feels amazing to be back into it.

Teaching your brain to actually SEE what you’re looking at, is harder than it sounds lol. It took me months to realize I wasn’t really “seeing” my reference photo. Now that I can see, I can confirm that this elevates your work!

This is a good start to practice with charcol! This is my first time that I am going to practice with this mediums. I never use them, since I watch a Lisa video, and wonderful advice of how you can get easy results, with color pencils, or other mediums, just practicing with charcol first. And I buy it! 😅 Thanks Lisa for those tips!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Timely tips for me too! Got an Amazon Gift Certificate and bought some charcoal supplies, the water soluble graphite, and more paper to try! Haven’t worked in charcoal in years, I’ve been out of high school for a loooong time lol! Thanks for all you give!

Thanks so much for your charcoal videos! They've really inspired me and I finally tried charcoal after avoiding for so many years thinking I wouldn't like it, and I love it! I just did my first charcoal piece a couple weeks ago, and I can't wait to do more. :D

I am so impressed. You are clearly a master artist and teacher. I am just watching this because I’m a competent artist, but teaching doesn’t come easily. I’m teaching a class on charcoal for the first time, and I just didn’t have the language. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom!

Thank you for the tips! They will be very helpful for me and your rose was beautiful! Would you consider doing a person portrait in charcoal soon? I would love to see how you do it.

I've been working with white and black on tan paper and just produced a pretty decent portrait. Thanks for the tips!

I think the paper is most important aspect in most art, more than paints and brushes .... just my opinion. Seems you're saying the same too :D

I like your approach on charcoal, great tips and the rose is just beautyful. Personally I prefere very, very smooth paper (like Bristol) for charcoal and graphite and seal the layers with a fixative. ☺
Have you ever tried soft filbert brushes for blending? It gives the softest shadings and transitions.
Your tip with the abstract shapes made my life so much easier, it's the perfect method for everything you paint.
