When I was about 6 years old, my dad surprised me and my sister by picking us up at school after shaving the mustache he'd had our whole lives.
We were adamant that this strange man was absolutely not our father and flat refused to leave with him. Our mom had to come pick us up, and we wouldn't have anything to do with our dad until his mustache grew back.
He never shaved again.
ETA: My dad passed away 3 days after I posted this comment. He gave me a card the last time I saw him. In it were some hairs from where he'd recently trimmed his mustache. It might be silly to cry over a few hairs, but I sobbed into that card that day. I miss him so much.

When my nephew was a little guy he walked in to wake my wife and I on Christmas Day. We knew he was coming so we kind of played asleep for him, but he dashed away from us in tears - he had never seen me without my glasses!
