AITA for not correcting my son after he stood up for a girl in the store?

rest of this post: I told them I agreed with my son, and we left the store.

When I later told my ex about what happened, he said I should have made our son apologize for being disrespectful to his elders. I disagreed and said no. I believe my son was in the right for standing up for someone who was being unfairly judged by strangers in the store.

So, AITA? Is my ex right, or are my son and I justified in this situation?

Just because someone is older, doesn't mean they are deserving of respect. Son is wise beyond his years.

NTA. Judging by the story, he wasn't taunting some innocent elder woman or something. Being older doesn't grant you the right to not be judged by others because of your actions.

NTA. In the words of Max Black "you don't get a bitch pass just because you're old". Your son is amazing.

Sun was right he stood up to bullies. If you’re gonna be a bully, you don’t deserve respect.

Being an elderly people doesn't give anyone the right to be a bully or pass judgement on others. Depending on their ages they probably wear something just as short or fitted. Respect is given when it's earned not just because your old.

Your son is someone this world needs without knowing more i knoww he is in general polite, responsible, wise, and knows that right and wrong are two very different things and he understood that age does not allow for cruelty they are still living in this world they must learn to change with it and your son knows that you raised him well and you should be proud of your child because he understands that respect goes both ways

That kid has more wisdom than 90% of the world's population. Just because they're older doesn't mean they deserve respect, especially when they're actively being disrespectful. If anything, you should reward your son for standing up for others, even if he doesn't know them.

You have raised your son well. If they don't treat others with respect, they don't deserve respect themselves. Simple.

I often find older people quite judgemental, and their not shy about it either, it's like they think they have the right now that they are old, they are also the worst at pushing in on a line, I would be very proud of your son, definitely NTA.

Being older doesn't automatically grant you respect from anybody.
