Vocals can be one of the easiest things we have to mix on a record OR they could leave us beating our hands against the wall after a long mixing session.

Today, I'm going to help you make mixing vocals a much simpler task by showing you my go-to vocal chain.

More importantly, I'm going to talk a bit about what I'm thinking and WHY I choose certain plug-ins when I'm mixing vocals.

A few things you'll learn in this video:

- My exact plug-in chain
- EQ before or after compression
- The parallel compression setting I use on 99% of my mixes and how to set it up correctly
- A simple way to de-ess vocals and avoid harsh vocal mixes
- And more...

My hope is for you to not only steal my settings and deliver awesome vocals on your next mix but for you to learn the why behind this chain so you can begin to hear what a vocal needs and deliver professional-sounding vocals.

Awesome job completely explaining the how & why in a short & to the point way. Plugin chain screen shots and the order of the plugins in your chains are spot on as well. And even though I already knew 98% of what you were teaching in the video I think I will subscribe now because I feel that in your other videos there will be something maybe I haven't learned yet. Thank you TheMixAcademy for the Video !

The vocals were tracked at NRG. Chester tracked in the live room, in a makeshift booth without a front wall. He used to crank his headphones, hence all the bleed. Great video, dude!

Best vocal tutorial lesson I’ve seen.
I’m going to scrap everything I’ve done on this track and start again!
Awesome work mate. Thanks

Hi David. Could you do an in-depth video on your template? Specifically, the bussing, labeling and how you set up and bus to a Print track for the mixes and master. I know you've touched on it a little before, but there's a few things that are unclear. I've already added the, sending instruments to a widening bus for automation and that's been very cool and also some parallel 2-bus compression, but I'd like to learn more about your workflow.

Thanks I don't know if I will ever run into that type of vocalist, but I know he went smiling.

So, what's the difference between the "Vocal Crush" and the "Ld Vocal Level", how do they relate??

On the parallel crush is it different in Logic? I think we have to use it as a send and add the level of it on the Lead Vocal?

Great video. To achieve the sound of Mike Shinoda’s rapping verses what kind of microphone would you recommend? Also, did you ever release a part 2 with the FX portion? Much thanks!

Great video! Thanks for the explanation. Is there a way for people to get their hands on these multitracks?

Dope! I wonder how well this works across different genres. Trap music??? A video on a Young Thug or Gunna type of vocal would be more than appropriate now.
