turn off hot water heater before turning off water pressure to your whole house. if you drain your hot water lines all the way to your tub, the tank can be partially drained leaving the upper element exposed burning out the element.

How important is it that the water is turned off? I've removed all of the tile and sheet rock, exposing the copper pipes, without turning the water off. While doing this, I did get that OLD MILDEW odor and left the windows open over night. The only thing left to remove is the drain and overflow on the tub.

If you keep hitting the tub with a sledge hammer and it doesn't break apart you might have a porcelain-enameled steel bathtub which will require you to cut it with a reciprocating saw..
