This entire sequence - about 10 min long - is just terrific. Hawke is phenomenal but so is Philip Ettinger as the deeply troubled man. One of the reasons the whole movie works for me is because of how similarly disturbed these two people look, and how the death of one of them seems to have just released their spirit into the other (which Schrader somewhat literalizes in the film's most surreal sequence)

I was in the hospital recently. I have, for the last five times or so, been met by a Dr. who was a Father of sorts, iI don't want to give titles as it's not appropriate. That being said, he knows I'm agnostic and still prayed with me. Held me in a hug, and gave a gentle goodbye when needed.

I'm a veteran so this is a Veterans Hospital (Honesty continuing) and I just... I felt deeply appreciated for it. Love sometimes doesn't mean your religion, it just means love. I don't know you. I never met you. I love you all the same.

I dont know, maybe First Reformed is the most underrated movie of all time. And maybe Ethan Hawke is the most underrated actor of all time. This movie both f**ked me up and helped my own writing like few movies or even novels before.
