Let's discuss the LAST Intel-based iMac ever made.. the 2020 5K iMac, from an honest point of view. Performance, Lack of a Redesign, and Apple Silicon Mac chips included!

Apple has recently released their 2020 5K iMac and we've been using it for about a week now. We're really impressed by just how many new features are packed into this iMac, especially the ones we asked for.

Things like Apple's T2 chip, an option for 10GB ethernet, a UHS-II SDXC card slot, 10th-Generation chips from Intel and Navi-based graphics cards.

Because of these features, the performance and value of this iMac is through the roof, which is Apple's goal because they still want people to buy these Intel-based machines before they switch to Apple Silicon chips.

However, we do have a couple of gripes with this iMac, which we discuss in this honest review.

I bought a 2019 high end iMac earlier this year and I couldn’t be happier. I’ll be using it for 3-4 years and then upgrading to the new ARM Macs as I never buy first gen of new products
If you need something buy it there’s always gonna be something new and better round the corner

If Apple Silicon and Redesign weren't around the corner, I would have bought this on Day 1!

I'm blown away by how concise you keep your video. It's poetic.

Your comments at 13:16 were spot on: if someone wants a 27" iMac and they need one now (for example, because they have an older machine and they're stuck with High Sierra, which is at or near EOL), they should just get one now. A 27" (or larger) silicon iMac sounds great, but that's a long ways off. And I was happy to see a slight improvement in performance/price compared with the 2019 model. So for someone who needs a new 27" iMac, this is a great time to buy.

I loved your quote about buying one of these, "If you need an iMac you're going to buy one." This is what I tell my clients all the time, "If you need a PC the best time is now."
Like you all I am glad Apple did go all out with these 2020 iMac models. I am excited for the 5700XT model. (:

Thanks for the great video. Which one produces less fan noise? iMac 27 or MacBook Pro 16?

I ordered a 2020 27" 5K iMac 3.3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5 last week which arrived at my house yesterday & love it so far! It had 8GB of RAM, but installed an additional 32GB. It replaced a 2017 15" Macbook Pro. I was almost gonna buy another Macbook Pro, but I don't need a Laptop anymore as I purchased a 11" iPad Pro last year which I've been using as my mobile computer. Love the 5K Retina display which looks better than the previous 32" 4K Dell curved gaming monitor I was using previously.

Came back for this video. Love it!
Just putting it out there the gpu score for the 5700XT iMac in the 2020 is still better than the M3 base gpu score.

M3— 46903
5700xt 16gb -- 77202

Yes, the M3 is way more power-efficient but that 5700XT in the 2020 iMac is still a beast.

I bought it by the end of 2023 for my wife, 3 years after debut. Such an excellent desktop for video streaming.

You coverage for this iMac is so good. Most reviewers really looked past this desktop brushing it off as “just another iMac”. There’s a ton of value here for some users and its cool that someone is giving it a good reasoned review.

Trust me, this iMac is still a beast. Yes it's not M1 Apple Silicon but for the price, you can get a really good 5k screen with FAST processing and you can add your own RAM easily. I added 64gb of ram and this iMac cuts like butter. And let's not forget dedicated GPU pretty much beats my M1 Pro in video rendering. Sure it gets hot, but man...this iMac is still amazing, but definitely don't pay that $2000ish price for it. If you find one with really good specs like i7 i9 5700xt for maybe $1200-$1500(in early 2023), go for it. Make sure you have insurance on it in case anything happens.

But of course, if money doesn't matter, go M2 Ultra and Pro XDR Display lol.

I just think this iMac is still a good deal considering there are many youtube videos talking about how it essentially competes against the M1 Max. It doesn't beat it, but it can go toe to toe with it.
I hardly notice that much of a difference. But also the support of Intel macs. They'll probably still support Intel Macs for a while, I"ll give it until 2026ish.

This has to be the best last Intel iMac, ever. Imagine if Apple continued AMD relationship, we'd get the 7900XTX on it lol.

What else do you need in a computer?
It has amazing 5K 27" screen.
1080p webcam
In term of speed performance, almost neck to neck with 2019 iMac Pro $8, 000.
128GB memory options.
SSD.
Good graphics card for playing game and also can edit 8K Video.
If this machine good for content creator, then this also good for majority users.

I got my high end iMac yesterday (was due on Monday) and overall I am a bit disappointed. I came from a 2016 MBP with 16gb Ram and no T2 chip, connected to a LG 42” 4K USB monitor. The step down to 27” isn’t the problem, but it really does feel like those bezels are gigantic. The iMac also creates a LOT of heat, far more than I expected. It does excel at video encoding/exporting, but the difference in regular performance is barely noticeable. It is a good value - I was just hoping it would be even better since it is the last Intel iMac. I honestly believe Apple is going to shock the industry when they drop the Intel CPUs - I really feel my 10-core 128GB system with the 5700 XT 16gb video is getting too hot for the level of performance it is putting out. And the bezels really are annoying - and I didn’t understand why people would say that until I spent hours sitting in front of a screen with these giant bezels. It gives the screen a feeling that you are not seeing it all - it is very noticeable when coming from a screen without large bezels.
