Bottled Water Is Literally A Scam

Bottled water has taken over the US. Bottled water is not only popular but it is the most popular drink even outselling soda. On one hand, this is a good thing as this indicates that soda consumption is decreasing across the country. On the other hand, this is quite concerning as there’s no reason to pay for bottled water. Only 0.6% of Americans don’t have access to clean drinking water so for 99.4% of Americans, bottled water isn’t exactly applicable. Yet, it’s not uncommon to see families and households who only drink bottled water. This may be confusing at first glance until you peel back the curtains as to who owns this bottled water brand. It turns out that pretty much all bottled water can be traced back to Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Nestle. This trio and especially Coca-Cola and Pepsi are experts at branding and marketing, and they shifted their strategies to marketing bottled water. You see, in the late 1990s, they noticed that soda consumption was started to peak and it was becoming clear that people were gonna pull back on drinking soda due to health concerns. So, Coca-Cola and Pepsi brilliantly pivoted to selling bottled water and they’re clearly extraordinarily good at it. This video explains the history of bottled water and how bottled water went from being a serious tool for accessing clean water to being a marketing ploy by Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

living in Finland or any high standard western country, I always found it really absurd that people buy water from a store when we here can literally drink straight from the tap

Regarding the taste difference, I don't know where those participants in the study were but everywhere I have lived there has been a significant difference in the taste

There is technically not a reason to have bottled water in the developed world, There is usually tap water in most places you can drink.

People buy it 100% because of convenience. We have water bottles in our house, but my wife still grabs bottled water because she is in a rush and forgot to fill her water bottle.

When I visited USA last year for 6 weeks, I tried tap water in many hotels and restaurants across multiple states, but it tasted like pool water (due to the insane amount of chlorine I guess). It made me nauseous and paranoid about getting sick from it, that I just stuck to bottled water for my entire stay. If a restaurant only had tap water, I had to drink soda.

Nearly all bottle water is just filtered tap water. Water is heavy and the soda vendors just get their water from the local tap.

I feel SO VINICATED by this video lol
I quit drinking bottled water several years back when I started trying to make more conscious decisions towards living more efficiently (less wasteful) and people look at me straight cross-eyed when it comes up on occasion. I always just say that the price per ounce when compared to what I get out my sink is absurdly high and that I don't like feeling hustled. I did have a high school science teacher that stressed how much chemicals leaked into the water from the cheap plastic bottles (especially when under heat like when you leave that bottle in the car for example) but people don't seem interested in that part of the conversation so I usually just keep it short by mentioning the cost thing.

In the Netherlands there’s a mineral water that literally comes from a big towns water supply where the water utility also gets it water from, uses the historical name of the source as their brand, and people in that town still buy it.

Humanity is hopeless, apparently it’s too hard to fill a bottle yourself.

Here in Mexico tap water is not drinkable, almost every home uses the 19L (5Gal) bottles. You can refill 2 of those for about 1 dollar at dispensers or have them delivered to your home. It's much cheaper and friendlier with the environment.

The only time I ever bought bottled water was when there was a potential water contamination in our city. Otherwise I stick to tap water.

I've always felt this way...until I moved to Arizona with its heavily mineralized water. No use boiling it (its still gross) and your home filters are too wimpy 😅. BUUUT because of that ( and its broiling outside 75% of the year), there are water stores that sell...water. Lol I thought it was so wierd at first, but they (R.O.) filter it for you and you can buy refillable 5-gallon jugs. And water dispensers aren't as expensive as I thought so that should be recouped over a case buyer after not too long. Way better than buying cases of bottled water IMO. And the water stores are kinda cute too 🤷🏾‍♀️

in other countries, bottled water isn't a scam. it's a testament of how incompetent the government is. so incompetent it created a whole market for bottled water.

I'm really surprised how companies can get away with deceptive and harmful marketing, meanwhile the government is looking somewhere else. Marketing is a cancer

It is not about chlorination water, it is about the risk of pipe leakage and getting sediment from the pipe!

Access to clean drinking water is becoming a URBAN ISSUE, not just a rural issue. See Flint Michigan or Jackson Mississippi.

Here in Germany, many have a "Sprudelmaschine" like Sodastream, where you can carbonate tap water yourself.

You just need to replace the gas can once a while (A can cost 8-10€ and can carbonate like 60-80 liters as far as I know.)

Regardless of tap or bottle, use filters!!! Make sure to use top notch filters!! At the very least, attempt to clear out those chemicals in the water itself.

I fill up my reusable water bottle with tap 1-2 times a day. I’ll never drink bottled unless I’m totally desperate.
