Did you know that 75% of tax professionals reached retirement age in 2020, and there's a 20% decrease in new candidates entering the tax field? This means a significant shortage of tax professionals in the next 5-10 years, making now the perfect time to become one. In this video, I'll show you how to start preparing taxes with no experience and no certifications.

### PART #2: About Me and This Channel

Hi, I'm Kat. With over 12 years in the tax industry, I've worked with music bands like Coldplay, the Big 4 firms, and have been self-employed for the last four years. This channel is about teaching you how to prepare taxes and use that skill to gain the freedom you want, whether that's traveling the world or spending more time with your kids. Subscribe for more videos on achieving freedom through tax preparation.

### PART #3: Getting Started

I'll record more videos on how to get tax clients and run your tax business, but this video is about setting you up to prepare taxes. If you have a client and no experience, here's what you do:

**Step 1: Get PTIN**
The Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) is required for all paid tax preparers. This process starts on the IRS website and needs annual renewal for a fee.

**Step 2: Get EFIN**
The Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) is required for those who e-file more than ten returns per year. This involves additional security measures like professional certification and fingerprints.

**Step 3: Get Tax Software and Take a Course**
Once you have your PTIN and are waiting for your EFIN, choose tax software and take a course on how to prepare taxes.

### Additional Information

Some states require additional registration. For example, California requires further education and insurance. While you don't need to be a CPA or EA to prepare taxes, these certifications allow you to represent clients before the IRS. You can start by preparing basic returns and outsourcing complicated ones or obtaining certifications later.

### Closing

Believe in yourself – you deserve to have that freedom!

This is why I end up doing a lot of amended returns. If someone only knows how to input numbers they aren't a tax preparer they are a data entry person. And if the taxpayer has more than a 1099 and w2, they can't understand the tax return.
