“You start off with big plans, big ideas, but then on the ground, you’re just jumping from emergency to emergency, and it is hard to get past the crisis level […] I spend a lot of my time trying to get through the day-to-day things.” – An animal service worker in a confidential interview.

If you work in the animal service sector, the experience described above may sound familiar to you. Compassion fatigue, burnout, and the feeling of working in a constant state of reaction are all incredibly common in the sector.

If your organization is seeking to interrupt this cycle to reduce burnout and increase resilience, we have some exciting news for you!

The Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) recently launched a face-to-face version of their free online training program, which is designed to help organizations implement a trauma-informed, culturally safe approach and create safer, happier outcomes for animals, their guardians, and animal protection workers.

This free, workshop-style training can be arranged virtually or in-person for any animal service organization interested in learning how to implement trauma-informed and culturally safe approaches in their work, and how to mitigate the effects of burnout and compassion fatigue.
Engaging in this training workshop as a team can encourage:

• Group collaboration and discussion
• Brainstorming creative solutions
• Team-building and support

Workers or organizations can also access the self-paced online training here. The three complementary courses include videos, graphics, worksheets, reflection activities, interactive questions, and quizzes, all intended to help you and your team brainstorm creative ways to shift policies and practices. Each two-hour course can be taken in conjunction with the rest of the program or separately to learn about:

- Implementing a Culturally Safe & Trauma-Informed Approach
- Trauma-Informed & Culturally Safe Leadership
- Caring For Yourself & Others: Preventing Compassion Fatigue & Burnout

More than 330 people from seven provinces have enrolled so far, with very positive feedback!
“I did all the course modules (once I started I couldn’t stop!) … I believe these are incredibly well done, relevant, useful modules and any organization would benefit from them,” said one animal service worker.

The Vancouver Humane Society is a proud sponsor of Humane Canada’s Summit for the Animals.
