Only thing I can think of to prevent the exploding is to make slits in the dough to let trapped air and gases out to relieve pressure inside it.

I think pricking it with a fork would help with the leakage

This is absolutely delicious and I definitely have to make them. FYI they do sell these sticks frozen on Amazon i'm 90% sure. I could be wrong, but I had a friend that was obsessed with these and had them in their freezer.

My theory To fix the leakage problem, cut the cheese in the middle, along the length making halve. Only use 1 half for each roll. Less is more.
