This is how you're SUPPOSED to be able to improvise. Making that stringed thing TALK is the most crucial ability any player can have. Graham has ALL the tricks here, and is so clearly a master of intelligent and sophisticated phrasing that I'm gonna look to see if he has any albums. It's not often I find an instrumental guy that I haven't heard of, but today's a good day for me, I suppose.

The chord progression is Emin7 to C7b5, the second chord outlines the C Lydian Dominant scale.

The chords are Em to C7 and an easy way to think of the scale is to play G melodic minor. You can also think E natural minor with a flat 5 and flat 6. You can also switch to E dorian over the Em chord.

This is some really, really great playing.  The runs are fabulous but if you listen and watch closely, it's those little tasty chord cluster licks that make this so spectacular. In this improv, Rick more so changes with the chord changes as opposed to playing the mode over just E. Of course, nothing wrong with that, in fact you get some incredibly tasty 'outside' sounding stuff. Plus, it's the way the jazz and fusion community plays. If you listen to Fredrik Thordendal's Demo 33, that's a fabulous example of Lydian Dominant over just a single note, if you want to hear the tension that the mode can create in the music. Although, Fredrik's demo is over B Aug, so it's actually a perfect setup for Lydian Dominant, he's not just playing over a single note.

Anyway you slice it, Rick is a very, very good player and his playing on this improv is fantastic.
