Today, Stoicism has been embraced by nearly every professional sport. Stoicism as a philosophy is really about the mental game. It’s not a set of ethics or principles. It’s a collection of spiritual exercises designed to help people through the difficulty of life. To focus on managing emotion; specifically, non-helpful emotion.

Something that I have for better or worse learned over time is that I will never be immune to criticism. I have worked so hard to improve myself, and be better and part of that is to try to escape outside criticism. To try to transcend criticism. I have chosen the high road and the path of responsibility. Higher education, a high responsibility high stress career, parenting, being a good husband, bodybuilding and strength training all things that I chose to work on, but I never realized that by choosing those I am also choosing a life where I will be criticized. I am choosing the life of responsibility and improvement and that goes hand in hand with criticism. I choose to walk a path where I will be criticized every day. I criticize myself, and I am criticized by the outside world and I am choosing that road every day because I will never be better without it. Choosing to be better invites more criticism, and we need it. Even if you feel it’s unfair even when you are trying your best you can’t outwork criticism you can’t transcend it.

I don’t control whether the algorithm puts this video in front of me. I control whether I play it. I don’t control how long this video is. I control whether I watch it. I don’t control in what language the audio is speaking to me when it first starts. I control what language it will be in once I adjust the settings.

I'm 20 yo. I was a student-athlete and I feel like going back into sports / training after 4 years of no training, gym, or exercise at all, just play. I feel like I'm so lucky that I got into reading this late april 2021 and slowly getting into stoicism. I'm going to work on myself even more and train myself while it's not too late to enjoy my youth.

Crazy story, I was actually listening the "The Obstacle is the Way" the summer of 2019 training for my first marathon. It was hot and humid, and I sure did "find my limit". 14 miles in, I ended up passing out, hitting my head, and was taken to the hospital. Stoicism is powerful, but dangerous!

It's true. I majored in philosophy as a former professional athlete. Lots in common.
