How the U.S. public became less religious

Is the American public becoming less religious? Yes, at least by some key measures of what it means to be a religious person. An extensive new survey of more than 35,000 U.S. adults finds that the percentages who say they believe in God, pray daily and regularly go to church or other religious services all have declined modestly in recent years.

But there is also a great deal of stability in the U.S. religious landscape. Religiously affiliated Americans are as observant as they were a few years ago, and in some ways even more devout.

From a Swedish perspective, I wish America good luck in its transition. The process of secularization will be hard to stop with the current social environment, which takes place more and more on social media. In written text, arguments and open, reason-based communication will often prevail over religious persuasion, which on the other hand is successful when it comes to f.x. influencing children face-to-face.

When the bible-thumpers have gone away, we can start a shared conversation about how to evolve as a global society, with a humanistic view on morality. In private, people can engage in any form of wishful thinking that they like, but in the common discourse, reason will be the main guide light. I look forward to that future.
