According to a study from GLAAD, over 80% of Americans don't personally know someone who's transgender. That means most people learn about trans people from the ways they're depicted in movies and TV.

From executive producer Laverne Cox and director Sam Feder comes Disclosure, a documentary that chronicles over 100 years of trans representation on screen, from silent film to Dog Day Afternoon, The 40-Year-Old Virgin to Pose.

I'm definitely watching this.
My first dialogue with a trans person was when I was about 19 or 20. I was working in the lingerie section of a major department store and a transitioning woman asked for some help. I literally had never seen a trans person *in person*, so I know I hesitated a bit. I wasn't sure what to say, what to ask, but I could clearly see she was apprehensive and a little scared. I decided to approach her as I would any other person beginning to wear bras, and she relaxed. She later revealed that I was the first person that didn't outright laugh at her. From then on, I had a loyal customer and friend.
Later, one of my college friends came out as a transwoman. She was someone I had known for years, but hadn't seen for a long while until a mutual friend's funeral. I honestly didn't recognize her at first, but when she smiled, I knew who she was. I simply said, "I'm sorry, I didn't recognize you with your new hair. What name do you go by now?"
People just want to be treated like people. And it honestly isn't that hard. We may not have a lot of exposure to people who are different from what we are used to, but that doesn't mean we cannot approach them with basic dignity and respect. I don't understand why some people have a hard time with that.

This movie is so great. I like that they actually acknowledge transphobia within the LGBTQ+ community. I'm gay and this documentary helped me examine stereotypes about trans people that I didn't even know I believed. We need more like this!

I definitely need to watch this. I'm mom of an 11 year old transgender daughter and I think I will learn so much from this.

I'd like to tell you a story if i may.

I work in retail, a few months ago this kid comes into my store, his father is in the food store across the street while he's looking at the toys.

Every once in a while he'd go into the girl section but try to hide it. I was then doing the rounds when i saw him hiding behind one of our island with a Barbie doll, the one with the football.

It nearly broke me to tell him that it was alright if he wanted to play with it, but he was so scared he just ran for it.

I live in probably the most trans friendly country on Earth and still a kid, not even 10 felt such a shame for just being who he was.

We need more of this, for gods sake, more.

In case anyone else was interested: The last frame of Disclosure, which is an incredible doco, is from the TV show "The Magicians." Candis Cayne plays the Fairy Queen.

Please keep going, and do more, I was born and raised in the Middle East, where I learned nothing but to be ashamed of who I am, until I totally lost my identity, and have no idea what I am standing for, my mental health issues went through the roof And I don’t think I will heal anytime soon, never understood why some people having no problems go to the gym to change their bodies, plastic surgery, tanning, and body modifications, yet A simple right another Human-being asking for is a big no?! Like WTF?!! honestly this just brightens my day💓

From a very young age, my best friend was a drag queen I loved him, I adored him. He would drop everything he was doing no matter what he was doing when I asked him if we could bake cookies. I miss him every day of my life. I don't care who you identify with gay, straight, trans, bi or green. He taught me that people are people no matter what we should all respects and care for each other no matter if you are LGBTQ+ white, black or brown. We are only here for a short time that time should be lived to the best of our ability. Hate for one's coloroor how one identified shouldn't never be a factor. Our world if colorful, full of culture and history no nation is perfect but we must do better. I accept you all as you are or as you want to be with respect and admiration.

I never ever laughed at trans people, I always was fascinated by crossdresing in movies and was disappointed that it was not explored more or in a more serious manner. I did not find the "butt" of the joke remotely funny but digusting. Wow, I can remember as a maybe ten year old I was riding the subway (from the country and not used to it) with my mother and I encountered a beautiful, glamorous women and I was absolutely in awe. And all I wanted to do was to show my admiration but I was to shy. If the person was trans or a drag queen I cannot say, but the presence... impressed me immensly.

SENSE8 and POSE changed my life forever. I will pay with my soul to watch like it was my first time watching it.

Having to explain over and over that folks have existed outside of modern gender binary around the world for centuries is tiring 😴People act like being trans or nonbinary is something new. Google is free y'all.

This documentary is so beautiful, comprehensive and necessary.

I remember thinking after I watched the movie: huh... not so weird people don't like "people like me" (trans people) when this is what's been shown for decades. Or if it is the other way around. Or if it's not even a "dislike", maybe it's incredibly hard to understand.

It can be really hard to live with. But also the least important thing about you, so undramatic and whatever. Depends.
