I'm perfectly fine with strangers reading my essays, I just don't want my PARENTS to read my essays

I can write a good essay for sure. But finding what to write about is frustrating the hell outta me.

3. Do Not Repeat Essay Topics in Multiple Essays
4. Tell a Story and Get Specific, Be Relatable, Specific Explanation of the Topic with Personal Details
5. Find a Balance Netween Reflection, Interpretation, and Narrative
6. Read Examples

If this were any other kind of writing I would be set. I can argue the hell out of whatever I want. I can analyze things like nobody's business. I can create a story about someone else with amazing details and imagery. I can find just the right mix between sincerity and satire to make my essays enjoyable, yet convincing... as long as they're not about me. The second you ask me to write about myself my mind draws a blank. I end up writing about the most boring and typical experience and drastically fail at any attempt to make it sound interesting. The writing is chunky and filled with simple sentences-- as if it were written by a second grader. There's no conclusion; the only thing I’ve learned is that there’s another person I can’t trust and my mental health is much worse than I thought. That is the exact opposite of what an admissions officer wants to hear.

How is every essay supposed to be memorable if they are all trying to be memorable

Her: You have emotions
Me: Kinda
Her: You have friends
Me: Ummm... this is awkward
Her: You have feelings
Me: I work very hard to ignore those, how dare you?
Her: You have thoughts
Me: My thoughts are wrong, I thought you understood me! And if a random person on the internet doesn't understand all my pubescent angst nobody does!

Your tip #8 - the "be yourself" one? - THAT. and individual self, not creepy self. Let's say I have a student who wrote two essays on the same prompt (one of those... write about something that's important to you sort of prompts). The first is about his passionate attachment to his first laptop and how, even though he had better, faster, more accomplished computers since then, he'd earned the money for that first one, and it was kind of symbolic for him. That's kind of quirky, and the essay showcases his goal-setting and persistence. Cool. The second version is about how much he values his time alone in his room at night with the door locked and no one to see him. The first is quirky and individual. The second is heading over into creepy territory.

I've had clients want to write essays about a LOT of crazy things - and sometimes the idea is cool, but sometimes the idea is just gross. It's important to know the difference.

Good thing I was diagnosed with a chronic illness. Will look good in the essay

edit: Just because people are still replying to this (which I have no problem with it actually makes me somewhat nostalgic) Guys I dropped out of high school turns out having medical PTSD is only good in small amounts. Was a bit too much to handle. But medically I am fine now... okay I don't need to give a life update in this comment no one cares
