Welcome to lesson six in my series on how to play the piano for complete beginners. In this lesson you'll learn another new piano piece, a new time signature — 3/4 time — and discover rests, which are an important part of written music. When you learn to read piano music you're not just learning how to read notes, but also how to read silence: when you're playing the piano you're not constantly playing notes with both hands all the time: sometimes there are stretches of silence, and we notate those in our scores with rests that are timed in the same way as notes.
In this tutorial you'll also learn how to play the G major scale in right and left hands. G major is very similar to C major, but starts on G, and has one sharp in it — F#. That's a black note on the piano keyboard, and learning how to use your fingers properly in the G major scale will help you begin to practise switching between black and white notes smoothly, which is a really important skill to develop when you're learning to play the piano.
