You’ve just nailed the difference between an artist and a technician.
And you’ve given me perspective on all of my big choices in life!
People always ragged on my choices, but they work for me: Nintendo > PlayStation; Mac>PC; CaptureOne>Lightroom; Pentax>big brands; etc.

Blackmagic is something special out of the box. Brings the cinema to our living room with minimal effort. Thanks for the video and explanation.

Can't agree with you more! What's best for 'pro' isn't necessarily best for laypeople as well sometime. Most normal people outside filmmaking does recognize image out of RED 8k is better in aesthetics than that of ARRI 2k image merely because of sharpness.

I love "cinema line" cameras like your BlackMagic with those creamy, not too sharp but lot of details.

Thanks. We all know Sony is the best (at what, you ask…). You reminded me of a Manager I had. During one of my reviews, she indicated, “You need to be more tolerant of those you feel are less technically capable.” I responded, “I agree with you, what level of incompetence are we shooting for?” - she asked me to leave her office . (She was a terrific Manager and a friend). Bottom Line: it comes down to goals and expectations of those involved - align those, and you’re good.

Important topic. I believe that lens choice is the overriding factor for most discussion on image quality. Good video, Joris.

One thing 8 and 10 bit cameras have difficulty with is super smooth highligh roll-off. Regarding image quality.. it depends if the environment is controlled, camera and envirinment are matched for the desired effect. Nailing the set-up and post processing. Cameras can look very similar with some finetuning.

Great vid man! I found myself preferring each camera for certain shots, though both did indeed look amazing

There are so many factors for each person. And everybody is different. I wear glasses, progressives. My peripheral vision is blurred and I need to move my head to sharpen a spot. So my "normal" is different than other people's. Also - since I am not an expert - I could not tell the difference between the shots. YouTube probably compresses the quality more. People buy cameras for thousands of dollars and then edit/grade the image or scene to make it more natural. I as a novice went down this rabbit hole to decide what to buy. And you-tubers like you, Joris, pulled me out and I bought an old, used Canon for $300 (ish), added some lenses from goodwill and all the criteria I needed for what I wanted to do are met and it saved me at least $1500. Planning what you need is also influenced by your "research" beforehand. Most of it is not worth it until you are a professional and do this every day. And last - Like with anything really - The difference between an $800 device and a $4000 device is not worth $3800. Not to 90% of people. Same with espresso machines, etc...

I have a question. I’ve been trying to find the answer to so you were talking about the image. I was wondering if the SD card you use also gives you more image quality?

Love Your Videos. I have heard that if you have a less expensive camera with a much better lens that the result, usually, is better than an expensive camera with an average lens. In my amateur experience the better the lens, the better the result with many or most cameras. Maybe Lens Envy is better than Brand or camera Envy ?

As Sony user, how do you grading your image in post to get the soft look like from bmcc or arry?

What are the best Camera settings for shooting with an IPhone 14 PM please

You’re right to compare lenses, the resolving power of glass varies quite a bit. Good video subject. Thanks.

Lenses, Light use ...shutter speed ... I also have a theory that water appeals to your eye and what appeals to someone else's I will be different. I struggled with my Nikon camera for a long time. I took some great images with it but it was just something wasn't right about it. The greens were always too green and the blue wasn't right and I'm a landscape photographer so it was incredibly difficult having to manipulate everything in post to get what I wanted. So one day I just picked up a Fuji film camera straight out of the box a small Fuji film camera with a simple kit lens and I took about 20 photos and I looked at the files and went. That's what I'm looking for. Is the Fuji a better camera than the Nikon not necessarily but the actual photos appeal to my eye and my look a year later I'm now into Fujifilm GFX and oh my gosh talk about image quality that is just smack it out of the pa you want. It is a long journey to find the camera, you want and I'm sure people follow the camera conspiracies guy. All I want is the perfect camera. And you're right what appeals to certain people I noticed a lot of the European photographers with their landscape photography. Go with that soft mushy. I call it the European edit look. I absolutely hate it now I'm not a sharpness freak but I do like drama and contrast in my images, so everyone is different.

I don't see a lot of pro's worrying about sharpness. In reality, if you want sharpness corner to corner, and the best possible performance out of any lens, you're only option is to shoot between f/5.6 and f/11 and I don't see anyone wanting to do that. (Except commercial and advertising shooters)

Talking about the comments not video itself; it’s 2024 and moved by influencers that claims to be filmmakers, people are still debating what is quality and the worse; what camera is better! As a filmmakers our first lesson should be video like that; forgot quality specs and brands… just focus on creating and creativity
