Try with Rum or Bourbon. I personally like the Rum Variant as it gives a sweeter flavor. the Bourbon gives it s smoky undertone

Id recommend what adam regusea did where he made a caramel and poured it over the custard. This wont heat up the custard as much as the broiler would

The reason why real vanilla tastes like that is because it is hard to produce. Most corporate oligarchs use a synthetic vanilla.

I made my own vanilla extract a few years ago when the price of 10 beans and 250mL of vodka was about $19 and a comparible store option was higher than that.

What I did, was used 5 beans in 250mL of clean vodka, and I cut the beans in half and slit down the middle. The extract was a solid amber color within 2 months and was useable within 6 months. I still have the extract, and smelling it is a nice sweat vanilla scent. The smell of most commercial extracts is not nearly as good. I think the difference is they use 35% alcohol whereas vodka and other neutral spirits are at 40%. In some, since the smell is off depending on the brand, they may use additives or other extractants or extraction methods.
