Svarga ≠ Heaven and Naraka ≠ Hell | Sanskrit Non-Translatables

The Sanskrit word ‘Svarga’ and ‘Naraka’ are almost always translated to English as heaven and hell respectively. In Christianity, heaven is a place where a believer is said to ascend after casting aside his physical body on death. The stay of a soul of a believer in heaven and also of a non-believer in hell is eternal as Christians do not believe in the doctrine of reincarnation. The Hindu idea of svarga is very different as it is a subtle realm beyond the perceptible physical world where a jivatma temporarily resides to enjoy the fruits of its good deeds. Similarly, naraka is a place where one suffers temporarily because of his bad deeds. This video shows why the English translations of svarga and naraka are extremely flawed and why we should retain the two Sanskrit words In English as they are.

The most interesting thing about swarg and narg is, you don't stay there permanently

Thank you for another enlightening exposition. 🕉️💪👍🙏
BTW, at 8:42, you say Karma is limited & therefore is the stay in Svarga or Naraka. I was wondering what happens to those whose Karma has continuing consequences. For e.g., J. Nehru's decisions on Kashmir & Liaqat Ali Pact still bleeds India's billion+ lives. 🤔

Great discussion.

Under Vishista Advaitha Vedantha Swargam, Naragam and Srivaikundam (Moksham) are physical places first two are temporary - last one in permanent.

Narakam is also relative based on the ignorance level of an Athman. Namalzwar says " நரகத்தை நகு நெஞ்சே laugh at Narakam" on the way to Srivaikundam. Narakam for the Alzwar is this world, while most of us do not consider as Narakam.

We have not only the concept of Svargaloka but also Dhevoloka, Bhutoloka, Pitriloka, Chandraloka etc. Those are the different state or condition of Jibatman after death. Which loka you are going to, is depends on the condition of mind(conscious or subconscious) spiritual journey & Karmic impact on mind before death.

I was trying to translate the word 'Samstita' to my son and found that either there is no equivalent word in English or I didn't know of one.
