It's certainly an interesting history. There's a second part involving Regardie and Crowley. Regardie pretty much broke his oath for what he described as the greater good and published the whole system with "The Golden Dawn". Crowley, of course, published the grades first in The Equinox magazine and later started Thelema. According to Regardie this open-sourcing of the system was aimed at hedging it against the threat of extinction, and to me, probably one of the biggest influences on Western Occultism to date. Dion Fortune was another GD adept who became a prolific writer on the high Magic. There's some modern orders that still use the name, or even claim direct lineage, but I'm not sure how active they are. There's probably more people who are self-initiated by studying works from either Regardie or the Cicero's. But in modern esoteric circles in general, I would say there's less of an emphasis on ceremonial- at least to the extent the original GD was. If anyone's interested, I highly recommend Regardie's works. Other systems worth checking out are Franz Bardon's hermetics and/or Quaria.
