A fundamental aspect of the categories is their a priori-nature.
They pertain to the understanding of the subject, not to the existence of objects.
It is this fundamental separation between the a priori categories from the understanding and the a posteriori character of all objects of experience that lead Kant to the central and most challenging problem of the Critique: the so-called transcendental deduction of the categories. That is: the question how strictly a priori concepts of the mind can be related to objects of experience.
