UC Santa Barbara becomes a Smoke-Free and Tobacco-Free Campus on January 1, 2014.

UC Santa Barbara is going smoke-free and tobacco-free on January 1, 2014, as tasked by President Yudof in his January 9, 2012, memo to all UC Chancellors.

All University of California campuses, labs, and centers are adopting similar smoke-free and tobacco-free policies to improve the health and safety of all UC students, staff, faculty, patients, and visitors.

The UC Santa Barbara policy prohibits the following:

1. Smoking (tobacco or tobacco-free products, that might be smoked via cigarettes, pipes, water pipes, and hookahs)

2. Smokeless tobacco (including snuff, snus, and chew)

3. Unregulated nicotine products (such as electronic cigarettes)

Why is the UC Going Smoke-Free and Tobacco-Free?

While the use of tobacco is a personal choice, the health hazards related to smoking and exposure to second- and third-hand smoke are well-documented. These hazards can affect not only the smoker, but also the non-smoker who is exposed to the smoke.

As a leading education, research, and service university, UC has taken a proactive role in addressing the impact of smoking and tobacco use. The new policy will create a healthier environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and will complement the health and wellness programs already supported on our campus. UC Santa Barbara is proud to join the hundreds of universities who have already adopted a smoke-free and tobacco-free environment.
