Optometry has been consistently ranked one of the best profession in America. There are many reasons for this. The lifestyle and work-life balance can be great. The divorce rate of optometrists is also ranked one of the lowest in the country. Income potential can also be amazing, especially since there are many different work modalities you can work in. Prescribing glasses and contacts can be very rewarding, but the work of optometry extends far past glasses on contacts. Fitting specialty contacts, improving vision in children, and being the gate keeper of catching many systemic conditions is a fraction of the amazing possibility optometrists can do.

I could have made this video an hour long with multiple reasons why I love being an optometrist. But I want to thank you all for the support here on youtube. You have been a big part of making me a better doctor. Thank you!

I remember the first time I got glasses. I was shocked while riding in the car on the way home at how much more of the world I could see; leaves on trees, trees on far away hills, tiny clouds. An optometrist made that happen!

I totally agree Dr Guymon. Going into Optometry was my best career decision I ever made. Love helping people and taking care of their eyesight.

Happy Optometry Day, doc! I can attest that optometrists don't want to retire. I've been going to my Dr for 25 years or so, and the man is likely in his 80s. He doesn't do dilations anymore because his vision isn't so great, so he let's his junior partner do them. 😂

Thank you Dr. Guymon! I enjoy your videos. I worked for an optometrist for about five years when I was in high school and college. However, I decided to make a career in law-enforcement. I’m getting ready to retire in a couple of years, and I am now taking prerequisites for optometry school. I am hoping to become an optometrist, and your videos have been very helpful. Thank you again!

I feel obligated to share my experiences. Optometry was good to me and my family during my working years; however, those days are gone. I fear that idealistic graduates are walking out of schools ill-prepared for the reality of the employment/private practices. I have a son who is a commercial airline pilot. He earns, in salary/benefits/ about twice what an optometrist makes. He had to work his way from small commuter airlines but at least he was not going to graduate school and incurring mounting debt. Never discount the value of " employee benefit packages"... typically optometrist are not offered benefit packages... buying single person health care is very costly. I regret sounding like Negative Nancy, but I think perspective students must realize they are being fed a picture of a world that does not exist outside of academia.

Wow, thanks for this video Dr! I’m still pretty young, but I’m deeply considering this profession. I’ve always thought that sciencey-medical kind of careers are ones that I’ve never considered, but now that I’m actually thinking about it, optometry is really interesting! I’m saving this video for the future, and just for myself, I’m writing this on 19th September 2023 ;)

I have 2 questions. 1. How long did you go to school
2. I want to discover stuff so if I study optometry are there many conditions which I could discover or are there new technologies which I could help developpe that you know of

I originally got my degree in History with a desire to get my Ph.D. Clearly, that didn't work out, and I found myself in the world of eyes by accident. Fast forward two years, Im working as a tech alongside ODs and MDs and trying to help our patients through many surgeries. I'm considering optometry school but given that I work full time to pay for my bills, I can't see how that would work? I'm only twenty four but I'm not sure how I'd go about it.

I have a question. What does it mean when your optic nerve is square? My dr couldn’t tell me as he has never seen this before. Have you?

Don't do it guys (especially if you are an introvert). I've been an optometrist for 10 years and I hate it.

What is the job title of the person who makes eyeglasses at the back of Lenscrafters? Are they called optical lab technicians, opticians, or opthalmic technicians?
