A long long time ago, the Finnish Maiden (Suomen Neito) was given a student cap by the students of University of Tampere. They gave the statue just a plain cap without the renowned Teekkari tassel (pompom). Then, when the teekkaris arrived to Tampere on year 1966, they made a prank, or actually more like a coup, where they added the teekkari tassel to the plain student cap, making it a teekkaricap. Later on, there was a discussion whether there would be turns for capping the Finnish Maiden: every other year teekkaris, every other year the university students. Though the discussion ended in the favour of teekkaris and the Finnish Maiden has been capped by teekkaris ever since.

So even today, teekkaris gather to the Hämeensilta that crosses the Tammerkoski to give a teekkaricap to Finnish Maiden. She’s given the cap at midnight of Wappueve, 30.4.- 1.5. This is the time when fuksis can wear their teekkaricap the first time and this is the time when old teekkaris gather for this solemn moment. (written by TUT)
