5G Link Budget Made Easy: Learn to Calculate 5G Cell Edge Estimation & How Many 5G Sites You Need!

In this video, I have simplified 5G Link Budget with the intention that anyone can calculate 5G Link Budget themselves based on this video. This means that after watching this video, anyone can estimate the number of 5G sites required to cover an area, a city or a town.

This is based on 3GPP propagations models defined in 38901 specifications and I have found them to be pretty accurate. The models themselves are quite complicated so I have given a simplified equation in this session that can provide a good estimation without going through excessive computations.

The session also shows the impact of different Link Budget input parameters on the cell edge calculation using a python based tool that I created for this session. I hope you will all enjoy going through this video. Remember to subscribe and share!

I loved the explanation, very simple and didactic. Just a small detail about the units in the application and in the illustration: the antenna gain must be in dBi.

Hi mate. Thanks for the excellent training. It's the best. I was wondering if you can arrange a training to show us how we can make the RF related tools like the one here - Link Budget calculation tools using Python..

Very Nice Explanation!! Thanks for making it simple for beginners like us. I just wanted to know if we can have access to this tool? Please.

Very well explained thanks for that.
Just want to know more about how to calculate the number os sites, i didn't understand the formula

Very amazing and detailed explanation. But is this link budget calculation consider both Coverage and capacity link budget? why this link budget is done for DL only? what about the UL link budget as it is a limitation for the number of sites to be deployed?

Thanks for such informative lectures.
Can we have access to the tool u used in video just to play with it and learn as much as possible.

Hello Sir,

To calculate the cell radius, I understand that we must consider possible values according to a reference, the break point (BP), and apply it to the Path Loss formulas of the scenarios provided by 3GPP TR 38.901. Based on that, I have associated each d2d (cell radius) stipulated a Path Loss value. By inserting these possible Path Loss values into the formula to calculate the received signal level and comparing it to the sensitivity of the receiver, we will be able to know if the link is possible or not. Correct?

In the dual connectivity scenario, how would the link budget and capacity of the network, consider the arrangement of macro and microcells? According to the materials I read and courses I watched on YouTube, everyone performed the calculation considering only the standalone version, using the 3.5 GHz frequency, for example. That is a calculation like the one performed for 4G. Nothing related to macro and microcells, or millimeter waves are being considered.

Is the mobile network planning, considering the calculation of the link budget, carried out by the Operator or by the Suppliers?

In the tools used for mobile network planning by Operators and Suppliers, generally, the main parameter calculated for the distribution of radio base stations is the received signal level or cell radius?

Best Regards!

This is very useful. Thank you so much. What is the required ul/dl sinr and throughput for 5G-low band 10 mhz bw? I didn’t understand how to define that values. Could you please explain? Thanks again.

The video showed calculations assuming DL path. Wouldn't the UL be more of a factor?
