Inside Wireless: Link Budget

Показать описание
The equation essentially calculates the power for an RF signal on the receiver side considering three main components:
- Power provided by the transceiver radio
- Gains of antennas on both sides of a link
- Any loss that occurs during the transfer
The loss component is composed of many parts:
- cables + connectors introduce power loss and reflection
- atmospheric conditions dissipate the wave power depending on the frequency of the signal
- multipath reflections cause random attenuation
- polarization mismatch results into power loss as well
In reality, parts of the loss can be often neglected while still maintaining good accuracy of the calculation. Naturally, the biggest loss factor is the most important, so if a cable loss is a fraction of dB, it can be ignored.
Nevertheless, the calculation of link budget is always an estimate that can be done manually on paper, but most of the manufacturers in the WISP industry have a link calculator that does the math for you with varying level of detail - some include trees, maybe weather, but very few include multipath propagation due to the computational intensity when modeling it.
