Day 109
What is disability culture? Disability culture is powerful. It’s a way for us to project a positive image and motivate disabled people to want to belong to our community, rather than have our disabilities be seen as individual tragedies, health problems, or a fate worse than death.
video description/transcript: Tiffany is a Taiwanese American woman speaking to the camera. “Today were talking about disability culture. Disability Studies scholar Steven Brown defines it this way: disable people have forged a group identity. We share a common history of oppression and a common bond of resilience. We generate art, music, literature, and other expressions of our lives, our culture, infused from our experience of disability. Most importantly, we are proud of ourselves as people with disabilities. We claim our disabilities with pride as part of our identity. We are who we are: we are people with disabilities.”

I think people need to stop thinking disabled as a bad word. It’s not. I’ve sadly had a conversation with a family member who told me calling myself disabled was making them uncomfortable even though I am. Just because they don’t like the word. I really enjoy your videos and shedding light on theses issues❤
