The Massive 2003 Half Life 2 Leak Explained | MVG

In 2003, the source code for Half Life 2 was leaked onto the internet. It was not long after that it was compiled and made available for anyone to play. It became known as the Half Life 2 Beta. Valve Corporation was unable to figure out who was responsible until one day in February 2004, the culprit confessed to President Gabe Newell. In this episode we take a look at the story of one of largest video game leaks of all time.

Back then Valve tried to lure him to the states with a "job offer" which was meant to arrest him by the FBI and sentence him to 20 years in jail. Luckely German federal police "got" him first and warned him not to go. For the IT specialists of the German police who usually had to deal with child porn perpetrators it was one of the few cases where they were able to have a joke with someone accused of IT related crime. Guy came off with a light sentence and is now part of society with a proper IT job instead of soletary confinement. Source : me reading a lot about it back then.

I feel very old every time when I see HL2. For me it still feels the game came out yesterday and still has amazing graphics lol.

I remember there was a valve documentary about this and they interviewed Gabe Newell about his reaction when HL2 was leaked and he said he found out because people were using the new source engine to make porn with it.

When I saw the E3 Demo back in the days it completely blew my mind. There was just nothing out there that could compare to that by the time. When I heard the news about the leak I searched for it, found it and played it and it was incredible. Sure it was an unfinished game at the time but it was crazy good nevertheless.

I'm pretty sure I recall there was some drama over Valve deception regarding the completion progress on HL2 at the time of the hack, with Valve opportunistically blaming the hack for the delay. Also Valve/Gabe were supposed to show the game at the Alcatraz event and they let everyone continue believing they were going to show it, but then they didn't show anything at all. Gabe just appeared at the event and disappeared, leaving everyone hanging.

The 2003 e3 techdemo was insane. People went crazy. The leap in technology was so huge, it was met with disbelief that it could be real. The ravenholm teaser later shown with sneaking about the combine in town houses was unreal with bullets affecting curtains and other physics
