Scoliosis is characterized by a lateral bending of the spine of at least 10 degrees, accompanied by rotation. These two criteria are essential for a scoliosis diagnosis. The severity of scoliosis — mild, moderate, or severe — is determined by the Cobb angle measurement. This measurement involves an X-ray where the angle of the curve is determined by examining the most tilted vertebrae at the top and bottom.

A curve measuring between 10 and 20 degrees is categorized as mild scoliosis. Treatment options for mild scoliosis range from periodic observation, which is the most common approach, to other more active treatments that I'll discuss shortly.

The primary cause of scoliosis is idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown. Over 80% of all scoliosis cases fall under this category. While the exact cause remains elusive, genetics and environmental factors are believed to play roles. Other causes include congenital scoliosis, resulting from birth defects in the vertebrae, and neuromuscular scoliosis, common in conditions like cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. Syndromic scoliosis is another type, associated with conditions like Marfan syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Mild scoliosis is often detected during adolescence. Periodic re-examinations and X-rays are crucial, especially if the curve shows signs of progression. Factors like the onset of puberty can lead to curve progression, making it essential to monitor the condition closely. In certain cases, scoliosis-specific exercises and part-time bracing may be recommended.

Scoliosis-specific exercises, such as Schroth, SEAS, or ScoliBalance, are distinct from general physical therapy and chiropractic treatments. Modern bracing techniques, like the ScoliBrace, not only restrain but also aim to correct the curvature.

It's crucial to detect and treat mild scoliosis early. In many cases, early intervention can prevent progression to moderate or severe curves. If left unchecked, mild scoliosis can develop into a more significant concern, requiring more intensive treatments.

If you or someone you know shows signs of scoliosis, it's essential to consult a trained specialist who can recommend the most appropriate course of action, be it observation or active treatment.
