When I worked as a taxi driver many years ago I was told I would soon be out of work because of self driving cars. Where I live most of our services are provided to elderly people who needs help to get in and out of the car, pack their wares, walkers and so on. Sometimes they need to be driven to hospital on stretcher as ambulances are used for emergencies. Can't see that disappearing soon.

Also, during winter the sensors of the cars are constantly blocked by ice, snow and rain

I would never take one of those. I know how incomplete the driving programs for those are. I do not trust them yet. In the future maybe but I refuse to be a test statistic

Listen. Human beings are capable of amazing things, and I know that self-driving technology has come a long, long way. But my ass is not getting into a driverless taxi.

Waymo has only kicked off for the public in June, which is why Jesse is seeing them more.

I used them a few times in San Fran. Honestly, I hate automation taking jobs... But they were significantly cheaper than alternatives (especially since no tip is required). They drive extremely well (they use a city mapping system, not like Teslas), and your life isn't in the hands of a shady driver (especially if you're a woman, any stranger's vehicle is dangerous).

Never once did the car stall for us, across about 2 hours of driving (split across our rides) but I'd rather have it stall on a slow city street over the risks of a stranger driver.

I would never use one. I am low key scared when my dad uses the self driving and I am not even comfortable driving with cruise control.

Those taxis are making you an easy mark to get robbed. All its gonna take is one assailant to stand in front of the car to stop it. And another to stick up the passengers. Atleast with a human driver there's the threat of the driver punching the gas pedal and running over the assailants in self defense or getting away.
