As a german and grandparents from Germany who came over in 1939, I have never seen either one of those. I am 52. Potato salad, was vinegar, vegetable oil, potatos, dill pickles home made, onion, salt, pepper, and hard boiled eggs cut up. Cumcumber, onion, tomatos, salt and pepper, vinegar, light vegetable oil. Home made dill pickles, 20 gallons batches at a time in a crock pot.

Thanks so much for your very informative and fun to watch video. I recently made a Bavarian style potato salad. I wasn't really pleased with the results of the recipe that I followed. So rather than tossing it out, I decided to make potato pancakes out of it. I used a food processer and added 2 eggs and 1 cup of bread crumbs to make a smooth but not mushy blend of the potato salad. I then formed the resulting mix into hamburger sized patties and fried them in a skillet. The result was the best potato pancakes that I have ever tasted!

My mom is German and we were raised eating this potato salad! Of course over the years I have changed a few things. Raw onions are still something I do not enjoy so I soak the diced onions in water for about half an hour. Instead of the pickle water and diced pickles I use green olives and the brine. We took a vacation to Germany a couple of years ago and I tried, for the first time, the “vinegar” potato salad and fell in love! Great video! Thank you!

You mentioned new potatoes. One of my favorite dishes that my grandmother made every year was Creamed New Potatoes and Spring Pease. The potatoes are boiled and left whole with skin on. After cooking the pease a cream and butter sauce thickened with flour is made and all is combined. Salt and pepper to taste. If she had leftover ham, grandma would add diced bits of that. Lekker!!!

My Mom makes German potato and egg salad with vinegar soaked potatoes but with mayonnaise. Very simple, next time I'll ask her to add some cucumbers to it!

I was born in the ehemalige DDR and we had to do lots of improvising when cooking or baking. I love to follow you channel so I can try making German goodies from every part of home! My boyfriend never liked cabbage but once I made kohlrouladen and rotkohl he was hooked🙂. Tomorrow I will try making this potato salad, it looks amazing! Funny cucumbers are one word in Spanish, too whether fresh or pickled 💙 pepino 🥒 potato salad looks relish. Very similar to my mom’s recipe I use carrot and celery instead of tomato. Will surely try your recipe. Thank you 😊 Greetings from New York City

Mayonnaise-based potato salads are my favorites, notably with hard-boiled eggs. Preferring rich undiluted dressings, I'm not a fan of pickle juice.

I'm surprised you didn't use a veggie peeler for peeling the potatoes, the Y shaped speed peelers are easiest.
