In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos!

As a soctian, looking to do the same someday, thanks for sharing your perspective and costs! Especially that bit about the costs doubling for cruising fees in the Bahamas!

Costs were interesting and what smart people do. I see to many with costs that have no insurance and additional necessary items. I put 2 months of cans on my yacht before virus lockdown. A good learning curve. Lots of food but needed extras to make a meal. Spam and baked beans and can peaches are a great start but need sauces for the pasta and the rice. As i say a good learning curve

Thanks for sharing the expenses. I have recommended this episode to a pal who is getting ready to set out. He keeps asking me about how much it costs. I don't know, I'm a delivery skipper, different budget!
Maybe I missed the episode, did you consider the direct route? I have done it a bunch of times. It is way faster and cheaper than coasting.
I like you boat. I had a C&C 38 Mk3 that looks similar. Lots to appreciate. Keep well.

Are the costs you list US or Canadian?

what was the total time for these expenses? 1 month, 2? $7609 for 2 weeks is excessive, not so much if it is over a 3 month period.

Insurances were nearly 50% of your costs but were they annual or just covering a shorter period?

How long did it take for the trip? Did I overhear that?

Several thousand just for insurance? Was that travel and boat insurance just for a couple of months, or was that an annual insurance?

is your boat mortgaged? Is that why the insurance was required?

Thanks for such a great break down. I’m assuming that’s in USD so us Canadians can add 30% onto that. ❤️⛵️🇨🇦⚓️

I always had the question? If you wash your underwear in saltwater, is the ending result itchy or scratchy. Lkl

Guys you made huge mistake...

You said you departed from canada, so I guess all the prices and values you used for this budget are in canadian dolars... am i right?
this is a major mistake when posting a video to a broad audience, even more because you use the same symbol of american dolars and they are interchangeable

this leads to a misinterpretation problem "should i think you used canadian dolars since you are canadian, or should i think that you used well sense and listed prices in real dolars?"

that should be the first thing said in the video
