Original airdate: 7/28/2017 | READING, Pa. - It's round-two for a youth boxing club in Reading. On Saturday, July 29, Star City Boxing will host its grand opening.
Last year, after city officials forced the youth boxing club out of Baer Park, Coach Charles Folk did not stop fighting. Instead, Folk found a team, and together, they opened Star City Boxing in the 400 block of Schuylkill Avenue.
"This is my passion. This is my calling. This is what I do on a daily basis -- give back to the kids in the community to make sure they learn the art of boxing," Folk told 69 News.
The gym is a nonprofit organization. A lot of the work to get the gym operational was done by the kids' families and supporters of the gym.
"We've gotten a lot of support from the families of the kids. The kids themselves are the ones that have been here for the past eight, nine months, painting and cleaning and helping out," said Alex Betances, the gym's executive director.
Supporters of the gym said it gives the city's kids a safe and positive place to be, especially after school. They added it helps keep the kids focused and keeps them out of trouble.
Charles Pickens said learning boxing has helped him learn self-control, which has helped him avoid street fights.
