I used a set of the chain vise grip on 2" pipe. Especially a monster coupon they tend to get a little warmish.

Great advice Jake. When i first started welding pipe. I would get so nervous when i tested. But i treated it like just another pipe weld. I use a vise gripe chain clamp also works really good.

Practice just like the test will be done.
So you can make mistakes an then you will know how to stop or fix them.

From a retired welder from the UK. I was employed in lots of welding projects including pipelines, shipbuilding, process pipework, power stations etc for over 40 years.
If you wish to improve your welding skills or test your skills try the 20 questions test, this was a qualification test to allow you to work on boiler repairs for Babcock and Wilcox on power station boiler repairs in the UK. You prepare 4 lots of 1.5 or 2 inch carbon steel tubular test pieces, 1, 2, 3 and 4 about a 6 inches long with a 25-30 degree prep on each end you intend to weld. Each lot consists of 5 tubes with a tacked up butt weld in the middle, these are welded into a frame with side bars to restrict access. The pipes are spaced a finger width apart from each other and the end side bars and tacked into position. This provides a restricted access welder qualification test, if successful in passing you become a grade A welder, qualified to work on the boiler tubes.
Lot 1 is welded in the 5G position with GTAW root and SMAW fill and Cap, Lot 2 is welded in the 2G position with GTAW/SMAW as per lot 1. Lot 3 is full GTAW in the 5 G position and Lot 4 is full GTAW in the 2G position. All are visual inspected then X-Ray for acceptance. No root defects or porosity allowed. A difficult test and a good test of proficiency in GTAW/SMAW welding.

Hi sir, thank you for the videos that you put out.

Do you see yourself doing saturation diving/welding in the future? I’ve heard some horrific accidents about it way back when.

God bless

I feel like I’m too green to go to Idaho for this. I’m 17 and my parents would think I’m crazy for wanting to meet up. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time.

Hey Jacob! I have a question on Tig welding pipe is it best to use a 1/8 land & gap or a 5/32 land & gap? or is it all personal preference.
