If you take “gay” at its literal original meaning, he is right. Everyone is gay at least sometimes. The expression “have a gay old time” is a perfect example. It has nothing to do with sexual orientation. Many of us are facing troubling and uncertain times, so we do need a little happiness. Will Sam’s album give you that? Maybe, but not without a measure of melancholy, which is his trademark. I mean the man took Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” from a dance hit to a heartbreaking ballad. Beautiful, but it makes you weep.
