As climate change accelerates, millions of people around the world are being displaced by rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation. This lecture focuses on the human dimension of climate change, examining the plight of climate refugees. Through relevant examples from all over the world attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those forced to relocate and the complex legal, social, and economic issues involved, with the help of one of the world's leading "in the field" experts on the subject of climate migration.
Speaker:
Manuel Marques Pereira has served as Head of Division for Migration, Environment, Climate Change and Risk Reduction at IOM headquarters since August 2021. Prior to his current appointment, Manuel served in IOM Bangladesh from 2018-2021 as Deputy Chief of Mission and Head of Office in Cox Bazar for the Rohingya Refugee Response.

Dr. Joonmo Kang is a professor at the University of Kansas, working in their School of Social Work. His specialty is in "eco-social work", the nexus of environmental factors and social work.
