To those who moan about Canada's health care - I know of NO Canadians who have filed for bankruptcy because of healthcare bills, but I have American friends who have lost their homes due to medial expenses. 😢

So proud to be Canadian. I always thought Canada was better than America. Now more than ever.

A 68-year old Canadian here, who served 43 years in the Canadian Army, and I've just put down my shovel for a few minutes from digging a moat between our two countries. Thank you for this wonderful episode providing some sanity to these trying issues with a sense of humour. No Canadian that I have spoken to is laughing about Trump's 51st State comments; rather, they're fighting mad. Increased border control and NATO 2% spending are long overdue and a no brainer. That being said, our job at the border is to protect our country not theirs. Fortunately, CBSA and US CBP work really well together, protecting us all; however, they both do need more resources.

Canadians are now looking at our southern cousins like they've allowed the inmates to run the asylum. To many Canadians, it feels like Trump is testing the water with his "joke" before normalizing another of his crazy ideas. This is one of his usual tactics. Looking ahead three years into his second mandate, one can only wonder at what the new normal will be: especially after armed troops on home soil roundup illegal immigrants for deportation. As a lesson from history, just look at the transition in Germany from 1935 to 1938. Germany was one of the most advanced and cultured countries at that time and went absolutely mental for twelve years, 1933-45.

Personally, I am gobsmacked by the underlying tone in most articles on Trump's "51st State joke, " which appear to imply, and many think, that Trump can simply sign an executive order and annex Canada. Not only is Canada a sovereign, independent country, it is a Realm of King Charles III, just as are Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and 11 other countries within the (British) Commonwealth of Nations, which consists of 56 sovereign nation states. Canada is a constitutional monarchy and a federation of ten provinces and three territories, period. Only with an act of war and a US victory could Trump annex Canada.

For new Canadians and for those who skipped civics and history classes, Canadians are sensitive to the American dream of Manifest Destiny, especially given that Canada did not fight Britain for its independence; rather, it fought America to maintain its independence from the US, e.g., 1775, 1812, and 1866, as well as putting troops on the Canada-US border during the American Civil War to keep that war within the confines of the US. Also, check out Washington DC's "War Plan Red" from 1930, which further muddies the water. This history is not taught in American schools, as I've learned over the years from working with US military officers serving in Canada. Our history, heritage, and honour of our ancestors are not something to snub lightly by shallow thinkers contemplating cheaper goods.

Should Canada become the 51st State, remember it would be a package deal, and you, your kids, or your grandkids could be wearing American military uniforms and sent off to yet another losing war on behalf of corporate America. Give this point, some deep thought. Moreover, wearing the Maple Leaf on a backpack overseas would quickly be consigned to the dustbin of history. Our ancestors who fought at Vimy Ridge and elsewhere for Canada must be rolling over in their graves thinking that this idea is even being contemplated. Universal healthcare would die on the vine too, meaning you could go bankrupt from injury or illness like many Americans do now.

As a reminder, Canada's Head of State is not Justin Trudeau. He is the Head of Government as Prime Minister. Canada's Head of State is His Majesty King Charles III, represented day-to-day by the Governor General of Canada, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of Canada. Governance, customs, symbolism, heraldry, law, and traditions are primarily British, tailored to the Canadian experience, including the Westminster modelled federal Parliament along with the provincial and territorial legislatures, as well as the courts of law, and the armed forces.

After watching the machinations since Trump entered the political scene, the strengths of the Westminster Parliamentary system have become obvious over the US Presidential system. No other country has copied the US model, and Canada's constitution is now surprisingly the most studied model, surpassing the US constitution. To much amazement, Trump has managed to find every loophole in the US constitution and legal system, notwithstanding their much vaunted "checks and balances." Most of these issues are not even possible under a Westminster model of government.

"If you really want to go, [you] don't know what you got 'til it's gone." (band Cinderella, 1988)

I’m proud to be Canadian, born and raised in this country. I have NO desire to be part of the states, NO wishful thinking to adopt their way of life and NO need to ever call the US my home. I love Canada, will defend Canada and will tell every American no thanks-I’m good.

In Canada we can go to Walmart without fear of being shot. In Canada we can send our kids to school without fear of them being shot. Just know, we are really nice, until we are not. So keep your insults to yourself.

As a USA citizen, I am so embarrassed by trump and his antics and apologize for the insulting comments he made that disrespect your country's sovereignty. I did not vote for trump as he stands against the values that have long been part of being a USA citizen. I fully respect your country and think it is such a beautiful place with wonderful people!

The real truth is that most Americans want to join Canada. I don't know any Canadians who want to join America.
