In elementary school 60 years ago, a teacher told us a story of a Canadian platoon as they were captured by German troops in WW II. Apparently, a German officer called out "I would urge you British gentleman to surrender". To which the Canadian second lieutenant was said to have replied "We're not British, we're not gentlemen, and we'll be damned if we surrender". Probably apocryphal, but the sentiment rings true.
